5 Easy Steps to Make Your Copy Sound Like You

Is this you right now: “Help! My copy just doesn’t sound like me.”

I have definitely had a few of these conversations with my clients so you’re not the only one.

It’s easy to get lost in your own thoughts, go down the rabbit hole of comparisonitus and start to subconsciously adapt your competitors brand voice and tone just through looking at their website and socials.

We often get caught up in the rush of getting our brand out there that we forget to pause, take a breath and just write as we speak.

As business owners, our ultimate goal is to be seen, to be heard and not sound like a robot in the process. So how do you get there?

I abide by these five easy steps:

 1.    Reflection - whether you have a service based or product-based business - it doesn’t matter. You are still the person behind the brand. It’s easy to get caught up and feel like you can’t personalise your brand because it’s not yours, but if it’s you who is behind the scenes then your copy needs to sound and read like you.

2.    Are you bold and bubbly, but your copy is dull and dreary? Match your writing style with your personality. Think about it like this.. if someone was to read your content then meet you in person - would they instantly connect the two?

3.    Read your copy out loud. Does it sound like you? Or does it sound like someone else? Sometimes we can write formally without even realising it. To pack it with personality, make sure it sounds conversational and interactive not stale and lifeless.

4.   Always go back to your brand voice. If your voice is calm and uplifting - does this ring true in your copy?

5. Forget what you learnt at school. Yep, as Copywriters, we are told this all the time. I mean please don’t throw away spelling, grammar and punctuation - more so, rigid structures and academic guidelines. For example, it is okay to start your sentences with “and” or “but”. It adds personality and character and can be part of your brand guidelines. Equally, if the thought of doing that makes you shudder, stick to the rules.

I’m a true believer in injecting personality throughout your copy to stand out and connect with your audience just by being your authentic self.
